Electricity Cost Calculator
Every electrical appliance's running cost depends on three things: how much power it draws (in watts), how long it runs each day, and your price per kilowatt-hour (kWh). The formula is: kWh per day = (Watts x Hours per day) / 1000, then Cost = kWh x Price per kWh.
Common Surprise
Wattage alone doesn't tell the full story ā usage time matters just as much. A 1500W air conditioner used for 3 hours a day uses 4.5 kWh, while a 150W refrigerator running 24 hours a day uses 3.6 kWh. The AC has 10x the wattage but only slightly more daily energy use, because the fridge simply never turns off.
This is why identifying your "always-on" appliances (fridges, freezers, routers, security systems) is often more useful for reducing your bill than focusing only on high-wattage devices used briefly.
Reducing Costs
Heating and cooling appliances (air conditioners, space heaters, water heaters) typically have the highest wattage and the biggest impact on a bill when used often. Reducing their runtime, upgrading to more efficient models, or adjusting thermostat settings tends to produce larger savings than unplugging low-wattage electronics.

Multiply the appliance's wattage by the hours used per day, divide by 1000 to get kWh, then multiply by your electricity price per kWh. For example: a 100W lamp used 5 hours/day = 0.5 kWh/day, which at $0.30/kWh costs $0.15/day.
Check the appliance's nameplate or label (usually on the back or bottom), the user manual, or the manufacturer's product page. It's usually listed in watts (W) ā for appliances rated in amps, multiply amps by your voltage (110V or 230V, depending on your country) to estimate watts.
Refrigerators run continuously (24 hours/day), so even a modest 150W fridge accumulates 3.6 kWh per day ā often more than higher-wattage appliances used only a few hours, like an air conditioner or a hair dryer.
No ā this calculator assumes the appliance draws its rated wattage only during its stated hours of use. Many electronics also draw a small amount of standby ("phantom") power when switched off but still plugged in, which isn't included here.
Check a recent electricity bill ā it typically states the price per kWh directly, or you can divide the total cost by the total kWh consumed for that billing period.
