What is GPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a standardized system for calculating academic performance, used primarily in American and international universities. Instead of letter grades or percentages, it converts each grade to a numerical value and calculates a weighted average based on the credits of each course.
The system allows easy comparison of academic achievement across different courses and semesters, regardless of their difficulty. GPA is used when applying for graduate programs, scholarships, and employment.
US Scale
In the American system, A+ and A equal 4.0 points, A− is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0, and so on down to F (0.0). GPA is calculated as the sum of (grade × credits) for all courses, divided by the total number of credits. For example, three courses with A (4.0 × 3), B+ (3.3 × 3), and B (3.0 × 4) give GPA = (12 + 9.9 + 12) / 10 = 3.39.
Most American universities require a minimum GPA of 2.0 to continue enrollment, while 3.5+ is considered an excellent standing.
European Scale
In Bulgaria and many European countries, a scale from 2 to 6 is used, where 6 is excellent, 5 is very good, 4 is good, 3 is average, and 2 is failing. Our calculator supports this system as well, calculating the weighted average on the same principle.
In Europe, the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) defines the weight of each subject. A typical course carries 3–8 ECTS credits, with final year exams carrying greater weight.
Tips
Prioritize high-credit courses
A grade in a 6-credit course impacts your GPA far more than one in a 2-credit course.
Track your GPA each semester
Calculate your GPA after each semester to know exactly what grade you need to reach your goal.
Retake low-grade courses
Retaking an exam with a poor grade can significantly boost your GPA if the new result replaces the old one.
Research grad school requirements
Most programs require 3.0+. Know exactly what is needed and plan your courses accordingly.
Use office hours
Regular visits to professors during office hours can clarify difficult topics and improve your understanding before exams.
Form study groups
Collaborative studying improves retention and helps identify knowledge gaps you might miss studying alone.
GPA is calculated by multiplying each course grade (converted to points) by its credit hours, summing all values, then dividing by the total number of credit hours. This gives a weighted average that reflects how much each course contributes to your overall GPA.
On the US 4.0 scale, a GPA of 3.5 or above is generally considered excellent (Dean's List territory). A GPA of 3.0 is considered good, while 2.0 is the minimum to remain in good academic standing at most universities.
Semester GPA covers only the current semester's courses, while cumulative GPA averages all courses taken since enrollment. Our calculator computes the GPA for all courses you enter — add courses from multiple semesters to get your cumulative GPA.
Our calculator supports the European 6-point scale natively. Select 'EU 6-Point Scale' and enter your grades (2–6). The weighted average is calculated the same way as US GPA, but displayed on the 2.00–6.00 scale.
On the standard US 4.0 scale, both A+ and A are worth 4.0 grade points. Some universities give A+ a value of 4.3, but 4.0 is the most widely used standard. Our calculator uses the standard 4.0 for A+.
