The Science
Each cycle moves through distinct stages. You start in N1, a brief transition between wakefulness and sleep, then settle into N2 light sleep, where your heart rate and body temperature drop. Next comes N3, deep slow-wave sleep β the physically restorative stage when the body repairs tissue, consolidates memories, and releases growth hormone. The cycle ends with REM sleep, when brain activity rises close to waking levels and most vivid dreaming occurs.
The 90-minute figure is an average: individual cycles range from about 70 to 120 minutes, and their composition shifts across the night. Early cycles are dominated by deep sleep, while cycles toward morning contain longer and longer REM periods. That is why cutting a night short costs you disproportionately more REM sleep β the stage tied to learning, mood, and emotional processing β and why a full run of complete cycles matters more than the raw number of hours in bed.
Sleep Inertia
An alarm that fires during deep slow-wave sleep triggers sleep inertia: grogginess, slowed reaction time, and foggy thinking that can persist for 30 minutes or more after getting up. Your brain is pulled abruptly from its lowest-activity state to full alertness, and it resists. Practical Examples
The sleep calculator is most useful when your schedule changes. Before an early flight or exam, work backward from the wake-up time: if you must be up at 5:30 AM, going to bed at 9:45 PM gives you five full cycles, while 11:15 PM still gets you four β far better than an arbitrary midnight bedtime that ends mid-cycle. Shift workers can use the bedtime mode after a night shift to pick a wake-up time that protects whole cycles even in daytime sleep.
If you get to bed late, resist the temptation to sleep in at random: choose the wake-up option closest to your normal rising time that still completes a cycle, then keep your usual schedule the next night.
