Runners talk about three interconnected numbers: how far they ran (distance), how long it took (time), and how fast they were going, expressed as minutes per kilometer or mile (pace). Any two of these numbers determine the third ā know your distance and time, and you can calculate pace; know your distance and target pace, and you can calculate the time you'll need.
This is the same relationship as speed = distance / time, just expressed inversely: pace = time / distance. A 10K run finished in 50 minutes gives a pace of 50 Ć· 10 = 5:00 per kilometer, which converts to a speed of 12 km/h.
Two Directions
After a run, you typically know your distance and total time, and want your pace ā useful for tracking fitness progress over weeks or comparing effort across different routes. This calculator's "Find pace" mode handles that direction, converting your time and distance into pace per km, pace per mile, and speed simultaneously.
Before a race, it's often more useful to work the other way: you know the race distance and have a target pace in mind, and want to know what finish time that pace produces. The "Find finish time" mode handles this ā enter a target pace and a distance (or use a quick-pick for 5K, 10K, half marathon, or marathon) to see the resulting time.
Km vs. Miles
A pace of 5:00 per kilometer and a pace of 8:03 per mile describe the exact same running speed (12 km/h) ā a mile is about 1.609 kilometers, so covering that extra distance at the same speed simply takes longer, producing a larger-looking per-mile number even though nothing about the actual pace changed.
This matters when comparing race results or training data from different sources: US races and training apps commonly report pace and distance in miles, while most of the rest of the world uses kilometers. This calculator shows both simultaneously so you don't need to convert manually.
Limitations
This calculator assumes a constant, even pace across the entire distance ā it doesn't account for elevation changes, terrain, weather, or pacing strategy (like negative splits, where the second half is run faster than the first). Real race and training paces vary throughout a run for these reasons, so treat the result as an average pace target, not a minute-by-minute plan.
For grade-adjusted pace on hilly courses, dedicated running-specific tools that factor in elevation data are more accurate than a flat pace/distance/time calculation.

Divide your total time by your total distance. For example, running 5 km in 25 minutes gives 25 Ć· 5 = 5 minutes per kilometer. This calculator does that division automatically and also converts between km and mile pace.
There's no single "good" pace ā it depends entirely on your fitness level and goals. Many beginner runners fall in the 6:30-8:00 per km range (roughly 10:30-13:00 per mile) for easy runs, but consistency matters far more than speed when starting out.
Multiply your target pace (minutes per km or mile) by the total race distance. For example, a 5:30/km pace over a full marathon (42.195 km) gives 5.5 Ć 42.195 ā 232 minutes, or about 3 hours 52 minutes. Use the "Find finish time" mode and the marathon quick-pick to get this instantly.
Pace is time per unit of distance (minutes per km or mile) ā lower is faster. Speed is distance per unit of time (km/h or mph) ā higher is faster. They're mathematically inverse: speed = 60 / pace (when pace is in minutes per unit).
A mile (1.609 km) is longer than a kilometer, so covering it takes proportionally longer at the same speed ā your per-mile pace number will always be larger than your per-km pace number, even though they represent the identical running speed.
